This will create a live Xiaopan with persistence

Create a New Machine in Virtual box I use Debian 32bIt

Then Point it to your iso under Settings Storage

Then boot the image with virtualisation in the boot menu.

Then open a terminal “not the root terminal “

    And type in tce-load -i /mnt/sr0/cde/optional/tc-install.tcz

“hint type in the first few letters and use the tab key to auto complete or suggestions”

That will install tc-installer, the icon will show up in wbar.

Plug in your usb drive “windows or mac will auto mount it, you need to eject it”

Then go to virtual box menu Under Devices you usb drive should be listed, Select it.
“ You will need Virtual box Extension Pack installed to use usb devices”

No need of a physical USB pen drive in VmWare, its possible to use a small virtual hard disk, but choose an IDE one since SCSI devices needs extra modules.
And I also needed to modify /etc/sysconfig/backup_device to point to the disk, in my case sda1/

Yes pretty much the same as here https://xiaopan.co/forums/threads/virtualbox-with-persistence.8744/
You can just point it to sda disk instead, when finished exit without backing up,
Then remove the xiaopan iso from settings storage, your vm image will boot with persistence, shouldn't need to change backup settings.
I boot from usb mainly to use internal cards, and using on different pc's.
