Mac RTL8188RU (AWUS036NHR) Mac Driver & Utility

There is a new driver and utility (v2.0.0 / v1023) for the 8188RU that was released 27/9/2012 on the official Realtek website. There are a few noticeable changes to this. It is not called Wireless Network Utility anymore, it is called the Green Wlan USB Utility and you can customise what you want installed. The:

• Utility
• Startup function
• or just the driver

If you go down just the driver route you will need to add a new connection in your network setting system preferences pane. You will also need to have your USB device plugged in for this process. I would assume you would at least need to install the Utility and the driver if you want it to work and use the utility.

The other good news is it supports 10.4, 10.5, 10.6, 10.7 and 10.8.

Probably should also mention that there are new drivers for Linux and Android.

• Linux Kernel 2.6.18 - 2.6.38 and Kernel 3.0.8 (v3.4.4_4749)
• Android 1.6 - 2.3 and 4.0 (v3.4.4_4749)

It also might be good to delete the old driver and utility using the Uninstall.command before you install the new version.

Can you switch the router / network / RTL8188RU to 802.11n network only and not mixed mode? Also change to channel 13 or 14 if possible where there should be less interference.

 

There is a new driver update (v1023 - v1024) and utility (2.0.0 -> 2.0.1) that was released 10 days ago.

Upgrade Instructions
1) Unplug your device
2) Close the utility
3) Use the uninstaller script in Terminal
4) Use AppZapper to delete all instances of the Utility
5) Install the latest version
6) Reboot
7) Open the utility
8) You should see the image below
