Easter Break I will find some time to install the V2 driver and take a signal snapshot of reported strength.

I use "'network stumbler'" or "viststumbler" to get an eye ball on what the signal really looks like and to tune the optimum direction of antenna. Great free apps, you should take a look.

Casting my memory back were you saying that V2 HNR should be using the OLDER V1 drivers?

And V1 NHR should use the V2 drivers?

Im talking win7 and vista both 32 bit OS

But the not showing so many AP's must be the Alfa connection utility internally set to show only AP's with a signal above XX dbi ?

Thanks for any tests comparing v1 vs v2 which you were going to do before xmas anyway.

I guess I'm just prodding for the results since you have both and I don't, and I really don't know/cant fathom why my V2 behaves so bad. Thanks.

Ah, those progs don't fit my taste. I use these instead of "netstumbler" small nice and straight to the point (we're talking 49K portable app) :

    http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/wireless_network_view.html

1.55 has a feature implemented that I suggested by email to the author, namely the ability to select which wireless adapter you want display of when there are multiple ALFA's plugged in. :)

(the default behaviour before was to display a jumble of each confusing the display with a high update rate set)

    And this :

    http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/wifi_information_view.html

For detecting AP's info and WPS status in Windows.

Small and nice, portable nothing to install. Author has lots of nice small utils.

Yeah already got all the nirsoft on a USB Flash toolkit :) wireless network watcher is a giggle to see whats connected to the router :)

Oh its getting the time to fiddle on the PC's without getting my ear tugged by the other half and work commitments but its not forgotten and it looks like I just might have a whole clear day over Easter to break something again...LOL since win 7 and vista running Alfa's very well thanks !

Its the time reinstalling the Alfa drivers but Im just making some room on the PC drive for a new back up image but transferring an older image to my NAS is giving me only 6Mbit transfer speeds so should be done by Good Fri :)

    @ rioboy

It doesn't really matter anymore about the 036NHR tests.

I bought a second 036NHR v2 and worked things out for myself what's been happening.

    What happened...

was when the first NHR v2 came several weeks ago (and I'm hitting myself not for sending it back to an official ALFA distributor, before blasting the pcb with a 500c heat gun in and out of temper and frustration due to how crap it was), and no it's still borked after reflowing all the solder.

Initially it wouldn't pick up a damn thing with the 5dbi antenna it was supplied with from new. I don't know why it wouldn't, but it just wouldn't. Not even metres away.

This supposedly "defective" antenna was exchanged for the 036NH's, where the 036NH's worked on the 036NHR v2 and the "defective" antenna worked on the 036NH.

That took care of that I thought just a badly tuned antenna and the NHR is more picky. Now worked normally...

Some weeks later in this "fixed" situation although I could now connect to signals normally, I started experiencing random "drop" issues with the first 036NHR.

I ordered a second 036NHR v2 from an alternative source that has never let me down so far considering I got ripped off with the first from a supplier I never used before for a higher price due to being an "official" ALFA distributor. This second 036NHR v2 works with the first's "defective" antenna, as does the other adapters and so far it's 100% fine.

Which has led me to the conclusion that for whatever reason the first 036NHR v2 was junk and defective and didn't work properly from day 1 from the start, that or it was dead after a few weeks having been fitted for the most part with a working antenna pinched off an NH in order to work instead of sending the piece of crap back like I should have done.

The second one is behaving itself normally, even using the "bogus" antenna, and the original one is back in it's box.

This one well might go bad and start disconnecting after a few weeks, I guess only time will tell.

But for now everything is ok, minus a loss of money that the first 036NHR v2 cost.

They are shipping them now with a really cheap looking tiny green pcb not blue kind of like an NHR v3.

And I guess it's a sheer lottery whether you get one that works and behaves itself 100% or not, as the QC on these appears lacking, or someone is sticking the resistors on the wrong way round or something, :censored knows...

On inspection the pcb of my first 036NHR v2 is fine. It just doesn't work and loses reception and has to be fed different antenna's to work.

I've also got an 051NH on the way from a supplier I trust next week, to complete the collection.

Because out of all my adapters, the only ones suffering to be having drop out issues (which can't be fixed with drivers) are the REALTEKS surprise, surprise.

My 036NHA (XP drivers) and 036NH (good drivers) has given me little hassle, so I'm trying ralink again next...

Thanks for the drivers I will give them a try. I did a very small test and it looks like it can find 1-2 extra networks, 5% improvement to far networks and up to 20% to close networks. I will do some more testing today and report back after some longer testing and try some speed testing and different distances.

Would you recommend getting the Kasens G9000 or ALFA 036H

    I own both...

And while they're both the same chipset inside, the 036H has a better quality power amplifier.

My Kasens G9000 speeds are all over the place at extended distances.

(Which is probably why the 036H costs more). I have an 036H v5 which apparently gets less hot than the older ones did.

    Hello,

First thank you for your hard work.
Whats the difference between the power settings under the General tab and CCX ? I notice a default under the CCX of 7dBm
however any value can be entered.

My other question, I just picked up a Alfa awsu036hnv. This is new and to my disappointment does not work with the latest kalix and I will
assume backtrack 5. Would you know of a modified version of kalix/backtrack that might include drivers for it allowing it to work.
I also own a 036H which seems to be the "King" but the NHV is very fast.

I would also be interested in knowing if you have done any work on the NHV

Thank you again for your great work

    Ken

The power slider influences the value in CCX. Changing value or setting in one changes the other, as they are both the same thing in a sense.

It's just than anything above Win XP doesn't have a CCX dbm box but a separate program in C:\Windows\ or C:\Windows\System32 to set it called
    RTLUI2.exe instead.

I haven't used my NHV on anything other than Windows right now so I wouldn't 100% know what exists yet on Linux (it's the same deal for the new 036AC), nor have I done any mods because I've only had my NHV myself less than a month. It would be relatively easy to unlock LED control, MCS0-15 & 1-54Mbps forced data rates, MAC address change and
other such stuff like 8188RU. I just haven't had the time or motivation to do it yet.

From a quick test I did it will go past 13dbm using RTLUI2 control, but I didn't want to break a brand new adapter trying.

Maybe in a few months time when I get bored, it's scuffed from being thrown around, and I no longer care to pop it...

There is no doubting that an NHV is a better experience than using an NHR, but right now everything including the NHV is packed in it's box and I'm using the 051NH instead.

When you say RTLUI2, is that a separate program you use?

The ability to switch from N to just b would be interesting for long range with the NHV.

I don't think your modded 03H file can switch to just b. At least I didn't see it.

    Thank you
    Ken

How do you recommend installing v3.1 on Windows 7? Setup.exe or device manager?

    Hey guys, in quick! :
I originally had my awus036h/rtl8187 running on backtrack, changed power settings to god knows what and everything else,
Currently using my windows 8 laptop, Dual boot with windows 7 ///god that was hard enough, the adapter doesn't disconnect and reconnect, it fully ejects its self. if i keep my sound on, it just continuously makes that sound when a device has been unplugged. tried multiple computers, multiple OS and its really bugging me!
I really just want to know if the device itself is like burnt out or something, I mean I have installed the drivers and whatnot for it and messed around with its channels, to see if that was causing its fault.
If anyone has seen something like this before and knows how to fix it ! please help me! I am at my wits end~ !

Try it without a USB hub & try a different USB cable. It might just be shot (the cable not the adapter).

Ok ,, will try a different cable, when I am running kali or backtrack // its a real pain .. imagine every time you write airmon-ng start wlan0/wlan2/wlan3
so forth ,, it disconnects and reconnects as wlan4/wlan5/wlan6/ lol i had it get up to wlan93 XD and its trying to automatically connect to networks around which is a huge pain because even if i do get it in the right position even for 6-10 seconds at most and i start reaver or something then i get spammed with a good 40 connect to network boxes .
will let you know how I go :)

This may help a few people who are having issues with windows 8/8.1 and patchguard. It's a small tool that 'patches' patchguard so that unsigned stuff can be ran on the system without patchguard throwing a hissy fit! I haven't tested it as I use windows 7 but by all accounts it works and the full details can be found on the following page as to what it patches and how it works - http://blogs.mcafee.com/mcafee-labs/malicious-utility-can-defeat-windows-patchguard . The tool in question is called KPP-Destroyer Final patch 4 and it works for vista/7/8 & 8.1 and the link for it is - https://mega.co.nz/#!vsh2jJ7Z!5at93tUZraYkX2TdYQCh_uGCDUJmZQ7BGlCx9H1_1I0 and is made by how02 with credits to Fyyre. It may be better to test in a VM environment 1st to see whether it'll work as advertised and allows you to use unsigned drivers, the readme has the instructions and seems pretty simple. Hope this helps some of you with windows 8/8.1 driver woes!

Am also posting this elsewhere in the forum so that others can find it easily as it may be useful for a number of other things.
