I had Alfa AWUS036H I thought this new version will improve my connection. It didn't. I would advise you to avoid this. --- Double Post Merged, 22 Aug 2014 --- Edit : Use Driver given here http://sgcdn.startech.com/005329/media/sets/Realtek_RTL881xAU_Drivers/Realtek_RTL881xAU.zip @kevsamiga Thanks a lot I had BSOD on win 8.1 and this fixed it.

Well let me tell you what I believe is the real truth about the NHR v2 instead, owning and testing, and sussing out all the adapters I do... It's not actually "crap" per se and is actually quite a half decent chip, but the modern drivers for the NHR are actually busted and to blame instead...but not much choice if your on Win 8.1 though I guess. But the point to using the 036NHR v2, is that unless your sitting on 1012.1 drivers (well everything below 1015.2/1015.0 really, which is everything for Windows 7 and below OS), your range and output power is handicapped to a large extent on the modern drivers using the NHR (something that the 036NHV isn't affected by using the same modern drivers btw). Why is that ? I have simply no idea. They just completely messed up the drivers for the NHR/8188RU since 2011 for unknown reasons to me. And since the realtek driver is universal catering for a wide range of chips, and the 8188RU is so obscure with only a handful of adapters using it, I guess they made a mistake somewhere along the lines, but it hasn't really worked right, or in quite the same way, since the time from the earlier drivers from 2011. The output and range is trashed. It is the most troublesome and confusing, if not the most fubarred adapter out of the entire ALFA range to own I admit. But on the upside probably the most powerful as testing on an Agilent Spectrum Analyser showed in prior threads. You can clearly see this performance loss by turning on debug mode of any modern driver vs 1012.1, and also doing speaker inductance+range testing of different drivers. Later drivers for the NHR are seriously screwed up compared to 1015.xx and below, all of them. The output power is cut down, and the range is reduced, and none of the available drivers fixes it. And I have been tested them all... Unfortunately being on Windows 8.1, you would have never noticed from the start that you lost any power or range because you couldn't in the first place use older drivers for your OS anyway, which is why you always saw things from the get-go as "crap". If you want a decently working 036NHR with both power and range, you have to dump Windows 8.1 to get it, and go back to the 1012.1 drivers that do work properly, and therein lies the big problem...they shouldn't really advertise Windows 8.1 support as it barely works to it's full potential this way... The modern drivers for the NHR simply don't perform nearly in the same fashion, and are just utter crap. Alternatively you can keep Windows 8.1, and just buy an 036NHV instead where things just work out the box without losing power and/or range. It's just the modern drivers that are stuffed up for the NHR v2, and since your on Windows 8.1, you just can't use the older ones to see the differences there are.
lol..it is ur fuckin pc problem...not da fuckin NIC AWUS is among the best NIC...what dafuq is ur porblem..??!!!
lol, its your fuckin misunderstanding. It is not a fuckin pc problem. Perhaps you didn't defaq read properly. If I could edit the title of the thread I would have edited it as " Don't buy Alfa AWUS036NHR V2 if you are on Win 8.1 I will explain it in details Here are what I noticed : Firstly, it comes with a low quality antenna that bends, literally. Secondly, there is no driver in the driver cd, you have to manually download it from their website Thirdly, if you are on Win 8.1 as I am on, then you will have BSOD after another, especially if you use more than one Alfa network card Fourthly, the fixed drivers are not available from the Alfa website, I found it only after reading through the post by kevsamiga Fifthly, the range of the wireless adapter is questionable on Win 8.1 All the above problems, except the 1 and 2 are not there if you are using Windows 7. You can read more about it here : https://xiaopan.co/forums/threads/new-alfa-awus036nhr-v2.4379/page-2 I am personally using AWUS036NHV in Windows 8.1 and it works much better!!!!!!!
No, it's definitely not user error... But the range/output under Windows 8/8.1 is really nothing to do with ALFA at the end of the day, it's in fact Realtek that's gone and totally screwed the drivers up for this obscure chip. And the range/output problem isn't specific to Windows 8/8.1. It affects ALL OS including XP and Win7 if you so choose to use the modern drivers instead of using the 1010.0-1015.2 range from 2011 which work properly and behave as intended for this adapter. All it means using old drivers is that you cannot therefore use them for Win8/8.1 because they don't exist as it was before the time of Windows 8 that they were released so your options are limited. So the gist is for Windows 8/8.1 your handicapped on drivers that don't perform the best as they could do with the same range and output on another OS ( using older drivers). Of course an 036NHV solves the problem on Windows 8.1 as it isn't bugged/handicapped using any modern drivers, and gives it's full output power and range unlike the NHR. There, that clears it up exactly what the problem is...it's the same kind of headaches as Atheros NHA and Windows 8/8.1 you just disconnect instead of having less output power. Ralink is still very problematic on Win8.1 too. The moral is, the choice of OS and whether you use 32 or 64-bit to a certain extent largely influences whether your adapter behaves itself or not. Sad but true. They never claimed it didn't work on Win 8.1 because it does, but it isn't the best setup to be using an NHR on quite clearly, so I would tend to agree with your assessment for Windows 8.1 usage...
unfortunately i've bought the alfa awus036nhr v.2 for my surface pro running win 8.1 . I downloaded the drivers that you have posted here, but it seems doesn't work, how can i solve this problem?
Make sure you use the v2 drivers. More Infomation http://www.alfa.com.tw/products_show.php?pc=34&ps=178 https://wikidevi.com/wiki/ALFA_Network_AWUS036NHR_v1 Download http://sourceforge.net/projects/alfanetwork/files/Driver/036NHR_V2_WIN.zip/download http://www.alfa.com.tw/download_show.php?combo_0=11&PageID=4 Let me know how it goes @poel
Ok, I have used your link to download the driver, the same problem. In the file attached here you can see the version of the ALFA device, the message i recive from Windows (ALFA 11n .... is disabled), and the link I used from yours.
@poel just install the driver via device manager / add new device, browse folder not the utility. Make sure you delete the driver and utility first. Reboot and install the driver via add new device / device manager.
what is the exact path to the folder for Windows 8.1? in this folder, I do not find the subfolder win 8.1
ok, i'm using windows 8.1 and i've selected 036NHR_V2_WIN\88_92_CU_Driver\Win7X64 The led of the device is still off, yesterday I installed the drivers for a mac and after this the led turned on.
@poel contact http://www.alfa.com.tw/contact.php Give them your MAC address, send a link to this page and tell them what you are experiencing. Also a system profile screenshot may help as well.
I have a Tp link 722-n and ALFA 036NHR V2 tplink 722-n is better than ALFA 036NHR V2 => Don't buy Alfa AWUS036NHR V2
Well here's my story...my opinion too as of today is DO NOT BUY this steaming pile of :censored which is the 036NHR v2... Out of all my ALFA adapters below in my sig *only* the 2 v2 NHR's I bought in my collection are either defective or dying/dead. The first one didn't work right out of the box until it's antenna was swapped, and it keeps dropping connections nevertheless. I should have sent that one back yes, but since I got it working with a different antenna more or less I didn't bother. I just put it down to a defective antenna. So I bought another one as a spare just incase that one died early. I practically never used it since it was a spare. It's stayed in it's box since I got it (apart from checking to see that it worked ok which it did ) and this one probably had a total usage uptime of less than 1 hr from new. It worked 100% fine then. I never used it. That is until I took it out today from it's box and powered it up. The second one also completely died with little to no use. Reception of 0% to 6% on all signals, I hadn't even used it, and the reception has gone deaf. The reception on these NHR's always fails on them time and again at random. This is not SECOND HAND gear or castoffs but shop bought new and sealed. And they've both been handled with kid gloves, no ESD, no powering up without antenna etc. Now I have 2 defective NHR's in practically no time usage out of them at all. Now for £30 a buy, I'd expect to get more than just an hours use out of them. And it doesn't appear to be dodgy soldering either because since I figured I had nothing to lose I blasted the board with a 500c heatgun to reflow the solder in an attempt to fix a brand new unused NHR v2. No, still cacked and still just as deaf. Amazingly it hadn't even been used at all sat in it's box, but now it's dead as a dodo. There is nothing wrong with the transmission on both however. It's always the reception that fails. It goes deaf either gradually or suddenly and no amount of fiddling around will ever get them to work again. Age of device doesn't seem to matter, it happens at random. My advice is if you want a Realtek chipped ALFA, buy the NHV or 036AC instead because at least it's a full board instead of this cheap and nasty tiny green pcb that "breaks" far too regular and too much for my taste for the money. Regretfully I won't be buying yet another NHR... I suppose I could always make nice plant pots out of them.
