I have two computers both quad core, one running vista and the other win7. I had problems with the RTL8187L chipset in win7 but now realtek have bought out drivers for win7.

    My adaptors are
    1. Alfa 036h 1000w with a 7db panel antenna.

    2. Wifisky 980WG 5800w. 7db panel antenna.

both use the realtek RTL8187L chipset which i find is the easiest to work with.
I had used to use an edup adaptor with the newer trl3070 chipset but half the time could not get it to work.

I havent really experimented with the wifisky yet as i only bought it a few weeks ago, but i did try it out briefly and it certainly has the power ! It was also very cheap at around $20 from China. I am waiting until i can get a really hi db antenna before i play about with it.
Fortuneately i live on top of a hill and have no obstruction that would block any signal.

You are better off with the old drivers and not the utility in Win7, I use bootcamp and find that the drivers from 2009 work very well in 64bit.
