你好企鹅先生, I'm a (brand) noob and am finding the site to be quite a good resource. I'm also a bit surprised more people haven't weighed in on this topic, given the popularity of Ralink chipset-based NICs - Alfa cards in particular. Afraid I can't offer anything new as my experience has been identical to what chazwitt describes: 1.) Downloaded the non-beta version of the utility from the Ralink site 2.) Standard install 3.) Clicking 'Turn on internet sharing' & 'Open wireless utilty' results in nothing 4.) Attempted to run the Wireless Utility as root, still nothing 5.) Added a new network connection in the pref pane, as you suggested, tried again as user and root - nada *Early 2012 MB Air running 10.8.2; Alfa AWUS036H I've done a fair amount of research on this and have yet to find a reliable answer. Would love to hear from anyone who has got this utility to work with any version of OS X 10.8.
Senegal thank you very much for the compliment glad you are finding it useful. I have the the network added in the preference pane for it and it runs in the task bar. When I plug the device in it automatically opens the Wireless Utility and I can scan for networks. Click on the images below for proof that the RT3070 works. Mamedo Glenn meknb Salahkun sardan91 karni64 chazwitt. My suggestion is you use the uninstaller, reboot, install latest version then reboot again. I should also mention I have the utility start on startup. I hardly use my RT3070. My daily card is the AWUS036NHR (RTL8188RU) on my Mac as it is probably the best external USB card to buy for the Mac. Also remember the AWUS036H has an Realtek based chipset, while the AWUS036NH has a Ralink based one. Realtek Driver Downloads Download You mentioned you have a AWUS036H? It works fine on 10.8.2 for me, but only through kisMAC. I will try later as my device is attached to my ALFA R36 (which by the way is one way to get the AWUS036H and other RTL8187L devices to work in 64-bit Mac OS X environment and work with past 10.7). The last driver update for the RTL8187L was for MAC OSX 10.5 Driver Package (UI ver. 1.5.7) 1315 on the 16/11/2009. I doubt there will be anymore support or new drivers for the RTL8187L and it is pretty much phased out. Shouldn't be as you can still buy them and they sell like hot cakes. To get it to maybe work you will need to start in 32bit mode. Made a few scripts awhile ago for the RTL8187L, I got confused and said B. They do not seem to work anymore 10.7+, and I haven't tried to develop them further. Here is the video: YouTube VideoWatch this video on YouTube. FYI for Others RTL8188RU (AWUS036NHR) Mac Driver & Utility
Thanks for the very thorough reply. The Ralink utility isn't going to be very useful since the AWUS036H uses the Realtek chipset (driver RTL8187L) and, as you point out, support for that particular driver is no more. I think that pretty well explains why my set up isn't working (duh!) It would be useful if someone figured out how to get the 036H to work with OS X 10.8 (outside of kisMAC) since it's still a popular device. I suppose it's time to update NICs. What steps were necessary to get your AWUS036NHR (RTL8188RU) working with OS X 10.8? Not just a plug and play job, I'd imagine .
Simply install the latest utility and it works Reboot is required, after install. As always if you have a previous version. Use the uninstaller that came with it, reboot, then install the latest, then reboot.
Yea, the RTL8187 doesn't work as a WiFi device in 10.8.2 but it works fine with KisMac or Backtrack (even through VM). Too bad
Stephen_MD you can get it to work using a VM, but takes quite a bit of setting up: http://atastypixel.com/blog/using-a-virtualbox-vm-to-operate-a-network-device-for-your-mac/ I still think the best way to get the rtl8187L to work in Mac Lion / Mountain Lion is with a ALFA R36 device I have contacted Realtek and they said they will not be developing the drivers further. What makes it worse is that they will not release the source code / make it open source so others can't develop a working option.
My AWUS036NH doesn't work on my 10.8.2 either. I've downloaded the latest drivers from RALINK USB RT2870/RT2770/RT3X7X/RT537X here: http://www.ralinktech.com/cn/04_support/support.php?sn=502 Installed them, rebooted. Ralink untility is added as login item, but when I click on "Wireless Utility" it does nothing. No console logs either. Any help is greatly appreciated!
Hello veeence, as soon as you reboot and the utility is in the task bar you can plug your NH in. The wireless utility should pop up. If not, go into Network Preferences and add the NH to your list of devices.
I hate to just drop in on the conversation like this, but with the driver support gone for the AWUS036H, is the AWUS036NH really an ok alternative? I have heard so many complaints.
Hello TLI, is the NH an alternative for just connecting to networks through your mac? Not really. It works with the occasional dropout. I prefer the NHR as the driver and utility is more stable on a Mac.
From what I understand though the NHR is less stable for linux though, as well as seems to have a shorter range and less stable connection. Such a trade off no matter which you get.
Hi Mr. Penguin i have mac ML installed in CustoMac what the best method to run my alfa awus036h ? Thanks a lot to you
hello 4mac and thank you for joining. What is a CustoMac? is that like a Hackintosh? Either through an ALFA R36 or through Virtualisation (e.g: Windows / Linux) using VirtualBox, Parallels or VMware.
I can't get a key from 192.168.2.2 to get a certificate. I'm using WEP and checked 802.1x using RaLink Utility
There is an app called Kali App that will allow you to connect between kismac and through the Realtek or Ralink utilities. There is a screenshot of the RTL8187L working in Lion. 10.7.1 to be exact. Personally, I got my RTL8187L to work upto 10.7.4 with the scripts I created. Here is the link: http://easymactips.blogspot.com.au/2011/05/kali-app.html
Hi, I am having the same problem to install the AWUS036NH on my Macbook pro retina with 10.8.2 Mountain lion. Unfortunately Ralink has merged with some Mediatek and the link above do not work. Does anyone have a link where I can download the driver ? thank you
You can always find the latest Ralink drivers here Sure13: MAC OS X: http://goo.gl/isnQF Windows: http://goo.gl/Xx4Mv Linux: http://goo.gl/ekpxR Latest version to date is : USB (RT2870 / RT2770 / RT3X7X /RT537X) 10/01/2012 V4.2.6.0 10.6 / 10.7 / 10.8
I don't seem to be able to get this to work on 10.8.3 The icon appears in the task bar, and I plug the AWUS036NH in, but the utility doesn't appear and I can't load it manually (nothing happens). I've tried to add the device as a new network connection, but it doesn't appear in the list of available devices.
