Those holes concentrate the wireless effect on the center of the antenna making it like condenser for wireless signal...

A regular antenna (on most old cards) is 2dBi My Alfa shipped with a 5 dBi antenna (every 3 dbi gain doubles signal strength) I have an antenna that is listed as 10 dBi gain but it really is about 9 http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Omni-Wireles...ectional_Network_Antennas&hash=item3f03ec9076 If you want to pick up more signals (exploring) use an omnidirectional antenna (OMNI = EVERY) If you want a strong signal with less interference get a good YAGI antenna off ebay.
