hey guys I am finding diffculties setting up softAP for AWUS036NHA, I have tried Virtual Router and MypublicWifi software and still not getting it.

also the miniPort seams to be related to my laptop internal Atheros wireless card rather than AWUS036NHA

has someone been able to activate a softAP under AWUS036NHA ?! using which driver and how please help

Yes it is possible....but only had 100% success under Windows XP (where you can also get the Atheros Client Utility fully working).

To enable this SoftAP feature & ICS in ACU, we climb into the registry editor and branch :

    \ \ HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Atheros \ ACU \ Settings create a DWORD key "AllowAPMode" with the value "1"

Using Atheros on Vista and above leaves a lot to be desired in the utility department and the XP version of the util won't work on anything other than XP. So it's either use XP or go home.

Have you tried TP-LINK-s utility? Its made for tl-wn722n and works with newer windows.

Yes that method works also for creating a soft AP and just using your own driver of choice (there still may be problems on using it on a 64-bit OS), but I found the TP-Link GUI buggy, it only semi- worked for creating connections compared to ACU and regularly took focus from other Windows.

Thanks for the answer, I knew it, spent hours trying strange that AWUS036NHA doesn't have this option even though it is there on every wifi card in the market.

Managed to find a work around for it, yes !! by turning on the laptop's internal wifi card, all you have to do is create the access point via the miniport supported by the internal card.

How to create a soft access point in windows 7:

    open CMD as Administrator
    then type the following commands:

    netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow
netsh wlan set hostednetwork ssid=[the name you choose]
netsh wlan set hostednetwork key=[password that you choose] keyUsage=persistent
    netsh wlan start hostednetwork

Then share the internet connection from AWUS036NHA ... go to the properties of AWUS036NHA > Share internet connection > choose the miniport ... your soft AP is up and running.

do not connect your internal laptop wireless card to any AP just leave it on

Another thing I noticed is trouble using virtual AP's (at least on Windows 7) in my experience is that some phone's won't connect to a virtual AP, they need a real one (Access Point).

It's probably some kind of security thing...
