The AWUS036NHR is an RTL8188RU device and the AWUS036NH is a RT3070. Both cards are N compatible and are rated at 2000mW EIRP. This is not an in depth review, and only shows a list of networks that were able to be detected by each card. Always, when someone markets and sells a new product (aka Rokland with the AWUS036NHR) be skeptical. If anyone has these two cards I would love to hear your comparison of the two.

I think this depends on the driver installed, e.g when i bought my card, (a TP-LINK RT3070) i installed the driver supplied by the vendor on windows 7, it show 9 networks available's. then i downloaded the latest driver from RALINK, after installed, it show 13 networks ! i was very glad...

TCB13 has some devices he can test :p, hint hint. There has really been no real good comparison with different cards, especially out in the field. I might ask ALFA for some demos to test, maybe when we have 30,000 members that might give us some free stuff to test out.:me

you're right Mr. Penguin, TCB13 has some devices... :eeks, he could make a review with the same models and test it with vendor drivers and then with the latest chipset manufacturer drivers (Realtek - Ralink) to compare results

    Hey guys!

Speaking in wifi cards... I just got a new addition to the family!

My opinion is... they all suck except for AWUS036H. The other drivers work poorly, they fail with interesting tools like reaver-wps and the general support is not that great. For instance in my BT5 VM I can't use AWUS036NH or AWUS036NHR but in a real computer I setup some days ago the injection works fine and they work.

    About signal quality:

    - AWUS036NH is "n" capable but AWUS036H works better even without "n".
    - AWUS036NHR has potential and seems like it works better then AWUS036NH and takes full advantage of the "n" but the driver is not working properly yet. We'll need to wait a while.

I never got the injection working. Anyway I'm using the 32Bit VMWARE image BT5r2 GNOME.

Abou the cards, the new AWUS036NHA (Atheros) works very very well, I think I'll start to use those instead of the old AWUS036H. I really recommend them.

    Hello everyone;)

I think this comparison is clear:

    - AWUS036H (new version) works very well avace several OS (Beini / Xiaopan / backtrack / Etc ...) This is really the card that fits all!

    The wireless card of choice;)

    - AWUS036NHR (to confirm)

    * For the latest Backtrack (version 5 R2 64-bit Gnome), the card is recognized but does not necessarily support packet injection ..

We must modify the kernel and drivers according to the sources I cited in this post: Message

Once done, you'll discover a bug with the associations of AP (BSSID & ESSID):

    - They may be double (association)
    - Either we find no association (which causes no associations between the station and the AP)

Finally and after multiple attempts, I finally have something that gives me consistent results and correct;)

    * For minor productions (Beini & Xiaopan & Reaver PRO)

Note that only version 1.2.3 Beini., Works properly and efficiently in WEP and WPA. Even the latest versions of Xiaopan are not as fast for breaking the key;)

In short, The NHR is highly sensitive and very effective if the drivers are.
The only problem, enjoy with a 2w txpower because it must change at each start of Firefox or wicd a proxxy simulating a country that does not restraint the power of this card ... (much easier to change the AWUS036H).

It is only my poor opinion of amateur but I'm sure some, saurront we provide further advice and much more interresting especially, much more rewarding;)

Thank you for this great forum ;)

From my experience the easy to read review I can write is:

Alfa AWUS036H (the legacy, gray one): http://www.alfa.com.tw/in/front/bin/ptdetail.phtml?Part=AWUS036H
Is the best card available on the market, its compatible with everything, every os, every tool. And it's cheap this days. It has a great output power of 1-2W that make it able to work with big antennas without any issues.

    Alfa AWUS036NH (green one): http://www.alfa.com.tw/in/front/bin/ptdetail.phtml?Part=AWUS036NH
This was the original attempt to replace AWUS036H with a "n" ready card, it failed big time. The performance of this card even on windows is really bad. You will get much more signal in a "g" network with an AWUS036H than with this one working in "n" mode. The BT5 driver is almost stable, it just fails sometimes to start working and showing networks.

    Alfa AWUS036NHR (white one): http://www.alfa.com.tw/in/front/bin/ptdetail.phtml?Part=AWUS036NHR
This card was the second attempt to replace AWUS036H with a "n" ready card, it almost got there. The signal quality matches what is expected and the card works well normally under Windows. Drivers for BT5 are unstable specially on the 32 bits version. Injection may fail.

    Alfa AWUS036NHA (black one): http://www.alfa.com.tw/in/front/bin/ptdetail.phtml?Part=AWUS036NHA
They finally managed to choose a chip that has the potential to replace the old RT8187L AWUS036H card. It works really well with BT5r2 out of the box. The card is Atheros based but it works fine with all the tools like reaver, supports injection, scans well and the signal quality matches what it should be. This card will replace the AWUS036H in the future for sure.
Right now the only drawback is the output power limited to 650mW.

Conclusion: If you're about to buy a card, you should:
    1. Buy AWUS036H (legacy gray) if you don't care about "n" compatibly.
    2. Buy AWUS036NHA (black one) if you care about "n" and you want to have a useful card for the future!

upon getting the AWUS036NHR i was excited about the power. however i found a problem setting it past the 20 mhz of the compat wireless, no mater what i did, kinda frustrating to buy a card regulated to 33 and get stuck at 20. so i searched and searched for a fix. so i could get what i was hoping for, i came across this post on a whim seems like the compat wireless driver needs the fix, now that being said. is it possible the solution to AWUS036NHR is this simple? i have no idea where to go to find out how to compile this driver again, cause im new. i search for hours looking for a fix, so far this is the best and most logical solution i have come across.

    the link is here. http://ttys1.wordpress.com/2012/04/...main-crda-of-realtec-wireless-device-drivers/

could someone point me in a direction so i can learn to give it a go.
    --- Double Post Merged, 17 Jul 2012 ---
ok. reply to my own post. any how after figuring out the driver install issue, i am running vmware image from here i was able to recompile the driver and fix the 20 dbm issue, just for interest. i was able to use the full 33dbm briefly. as the card is stated, i didn't feel like frying it or something, so i decreased it back to allowable limits, seems when entering txpower command i get the same error, however after running iwconfig and checking tx-power it has changed, and the driver is working properly now with full input and output.

injection works fine even at 33 so well there goes. experiment finished and happy with the results. would never run above allotted power, but had to just see. curiosity i guess.

    Hello ;)

It's fair and it operates at a single condition!

If one has only alfa awus036NHR ...

I tried to see and it works fine but since I can no longer AWUS036H enter 30dBm.

The NHR is well 33dBm but its impossible to restore a change on H since it was tested ...

So a big thank you to those who owns this card but beware, others will not endure the change in the line crda;)

    thank you;)
