if your 500 MW TP-link card is not as good as your 50 MW laptop you have a hardware problem.
    A couple of possibilities:
    1. Bad antenna
    Unscrew from RP-SMA connector
Replace with one borrowed from a friend
Test i if reception is better you can order an antenna off ebay for $

    2. Broken solder joint to RP-SMA connector to antenna.
    unplug from USB
remove the cover of your card
check for a good connection between PC board and antenna connector with a multimeter (low resistance = good)

    3. Something broken with the internal circuits.
    buy a new one here.

    A few thoughts . . .
    1. 12 dBi omni directional is hard to do without a huge antenna.
Sellers may claim 12 dBi omni, but anything more than 9 dBi has an antenna that is hard to work with because of size.

    2. I prefer an 18 dBi yagi antenna like the one below.
I have several like this that are NOT 20 dBi as advertised, but just over 16.
    http://www.ebay.ca/itm/2-4GHz-20dBi...tenna-For-Modem-PCI-Card-Router-/230856582634
They are not very good outside for our icy and snowy winter here in Canada.
I have one inside my office pointing to my wifi 3 buildings away and get 100% signal. (-38 RSSI)

    3. If you are "wardriving" and experimenting you want to start with OMNI to see what signals are in the area.
The I switch to a directional antenna like the one above and aim it to get the strongest signal.
Under windows I us Inssider (http://www.metageek.net/support/downloads/) for the time graph
I aim the antenna for 1 minute intervals and see which signals come in stronger at that angle.
Inssider is also good for driving as it handles GPS.

When you asked about supporting a particular antenna, I am not sure I know what you mean.
Here in Canada I believe the maximum broadcast power I am allowed WITHOUT A BROADCAST LICENSE is 1 Watt.

    so . . . 500 MW device with a 2 dBi antenna give 1 W broadcast.
I am using a 2000 MW broadcast with an 18 dBi YAGI antenna so I am 36 times over the legal limit for my country.
The law is probably designed to stop Radio Interference, so they probably don't care about my directional, narrow band, point to point WIFI network, but they may tell me to change my setup if someone complains about interference.

This has good basic info - http://www.microsoft.com/athome/setup/wirelesstips.aspx#fbid=1C8Zru2yDHc

This gets technical, but the section on ground scattering helped me fix some problems for our network.

A quick check of real length vs dBi

1135 mm is the calculated length for a 12 dBi dipole antenna.
((that is 44.65 inches)) for my American friends.

I assume your antennas were not high end carefully tuned for frequency.

You can look up the calculations for theoretical maximums for a given style and length.
I also test in real world using a quick and dirty windows (Inssider) or 'NIX environments (airmon).

every 3 dBi is a doubling in real power.

if your read the RSSI you can test the difference that different antennas and adapters make.

Here is an example of my laptops internal intel chipset VS my external Realtek 8187b with 6dB1 antenna
