Gancho is looking for a wireless device that can be taken on the boat and perform well. Anyone have any ideas? Remember it has to be waterproof Ok gancho You have quite a number of cards already. • RTL8187L • RTL8188RU • RT3070 You don't really need anymore. It would be great if you could just get a waterproof case with an internal antenna you can connect to. If you get adapter 1 or 2 you would be able to swap the cards you have into the case. Perhaps you can make a case by yourself. A perspex clear case would look cool I figure that a omni directional would be better on the sea as you do not have ensure you are focussed on the AP, which should result in a more stable connection. 1) Adapter: Alfa 2000mW UBDo-nt (RT3070) Waterproof Marine with Integrated 12dBi Antenna - Buy from Amazon Benefits • N compatible • High power 2000mW • Power is focused because it is a directional • Good utilities in Windows and Mac, stable Linux drivers • Waterproof Cons • Not perfect for hacking though. • Maybe difficult to mount on a pole, you could use cable ties as a temporary measure • Requires 2 USB ports • Little big • You already have the chipset 2) Adapter: UBDo-gt8 RTL8187L 802.11bg Long-Range Outdoor USB AP/CPE Integrated 12dBi 2.4GHz Antenna Benefits • Adhoc Mode • 1000mW • Antenna built in • Waterproof Cons • Old card • You already have the chipset 3) Adapter: Tube-U(N) RT3070 Long-Range Wireless 802.11b/g/n Outdoor USB CPE Benefits • 30dbm • As waterproof as you can get • Attach any N type connector antenna to it Cons • Expensive • No antenna, you will have to buy one 4) Adapter UBDo-g 802.11bg RTL8187 Long-Range Outdoor USB AP/CPE Benefits • 30dbm • Waterproof • Fairly cheap • Customisable Cons • Requires an N type antenna I will add more non-alfa products tomorrow when I have a look
I suggest something with a 12dBi antenna N type omni directional if you want to get no. 3. So I think about the same price as what you paid for with the one you are unhappy with. If there are any that are 15dBi and they are probably lying. So ask a few questions from the supplier. You could also mount it like this:
